Tools for DIY mobile repair

If you are considering repairing or replacing a part of your phone, below are a list of the basic tools you will need at the various stages:

Removing the adhesive

Various components in the phone are glued with strong adhesive like the back cover, battery and the display screen.

  • Heat Gun is used to soften up the adhesive, so that it can be cut with sharp razor or a thin plastic sheet. Be careful not to overheat the components, else they can be damaged or melt.
  • Isopropyl alcohol is used to dissolve strong glue which is difficult to remove.
  • Suction tool to lift up the back cover or the screen to insert the razor to cut the glue.

Pry tools

During disassembly, there are various cables, plastic covers, clips, etc. that need to be lifted or pried open.

  • Plastic pry tools are used for sensitive components like lifting cables or plastic components.
  • Metal pry tools are used for stronger force like prying the battery off.

Screwdrivers

You will need an assortment of precision screwdrivers to disassemble different parts. The most common screwdriver needed will be a phillips head or a T20 torx head to a more exotic tri-wing (needed for iPhones)

Reassembly

After the repair, you will need adhesive to seal the phone back up. Commonly a double sided tape can be used for the battery and a liquid adhesive (T-7000) can be used for sealing the display or the back cover.
